What is Electromagnetic Radiation (Electrosmog)?

Electromagnetic radiation, electromagnetic fields, and electromagnetic waves are terms almost everyone in modern society has heard. But what exactly do these terms mean, and why is this topic becoming increasingly vital for each of us? “Electromagnetic radiation” (commonly referred to as electrosmog) refers to all artificially generated electromagnetic fields in our environment to which people are continuously exposed over long periods.

Electromagnetic radiation is classified as non-ionizing radiation, meaning it does not possess enough energy to strip electrons from atoms or molecules like ionizing radiation (e.g., radioactive substances) does. It is primarily categorized into the following:

  • Low-Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields: Generated during the production, transmission, or application of electrical power, such as common AC circuits and standard household appliances.

  • High-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields: Generated by wireless transmission technology, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or baby monitors. Microwave ovens in the kitchen also utilize high-frequency electromagnetic fields to heat food.

In addition to artificially generated radiation, natural electromagnetic fields also exist in the environment. In the low-frequency spectrum, electric and magnetic fields usually act separately; however, in the high-frequency spectrum, they are closely interconnected and are collectively referred to as electromagnetic fields. The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) website provides an up-to-date scientific overview of electromagnetic radiation and its effects on the human body, advising the public to take appropriate precautionary measures.

How Are We Exposed to Increasing Electrosmog?

With the rapid acceleration of digitalization and the expansion of power grids, our exposure to electrosmog in homes, schools, workplaces, and on the road continues to rise. As new technologies roll out, artificial low- and high-frequency radiation sources have become ubiquitous:

  • Personal Electronic Devices: Cordless DECT phones and smartphones have long been a part of everyday life. Countless children and teenagers use smartphones, tablets, and laptops throughout the day. According to Statista, there are currently over 7.3 billion mobile phones and smartphones in use worldwide, with that number continuing to climb.

  • Expansion of Cellular Networks: To ensure seamless coverage, the installation of mobile phone base stations has experienced explosive growth.

  • Wireless Transmission Technologies: High-frequency technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) seamlessly interconnect various communication and data-processing devices.

  • Smart Homes and Electric Vehicles: Networked and remotely controlled Smart Home devices bring convenience, but they also increase our exposure to radiation. This trend extends even to automobiles: beyond Bluetooth, GPS, seat heaters, and cellular data, electric motors and battery packs in electric vehicles significantly increase passengers’ overall exposure to electromagnetic radiation.

Potential Health Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation

The “Initiative for the Protection of Human and Environment,” a non-profit organization composed of scientists and physicians, has extensively explored the potential impacts of electrosmog. The 2012 International Doctors’ Appeal noted: “Our bodies are composed primarily of water and are controlled by bio-electric impulses. Electromagnetic radiation interferes with these natural processes. These rays penetrate the body and disrupt optimal cellular supply.”

Long-term exposure to artificial electromagnetic radiation may fundamentally affect normal physiological processes. Common concerns include:

  • Lack of concentration and sleep disorders

  • Imbalance of the autonomic nervous system

  • Weakened immune system function

  • Body acidity and impaired metabolic circulation

  • Mental tension and chronic stress

Are Government and Regulatory Protection Measures Enough?

Regulations such as the Federal Immission Control Act establish safety standards aimed at protecting the public from health hazards associated with low-frequency and direct-current systems. Considering scientific uncertainties, the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) also recommends supplementary precautionary measures.

However, many mistakenly assume that “as long as it complies with official legal limits, electrosmog is completely harmless.” The current benchmark for measuring mobile communication radiation limits is the SAR value (Specific Absorption Rate), which measures the rate at which electromagnetic energy is absorbed by human tissue. Crucially, current SAR safety limits are based solely on the “thermal effect” (heating effect) of radiation, completely ignoring non-thermal effects (such as potential damage to cellular genomes, nervous system interference, etc.).

In fact, several countries have already instituted stricter precautionary measures:

  • India: The High Court banned the construction of mobile cell towers near schools and hospitals due to health risks.

  • Israel: Banned Wi-Fi in kindergartens and preschools, while strictly limiting its use in primary schools.

  • France: Enacted comprehensive legislation in 2018 banning student mobile phone use in schools for children under 15.

  • Australia: Banned mobile phones in public schools starting in 2024, and prohibited social media use for teens under 16 starting in 2025.

  • United Kingdom: Expected to implement a full ban on social media for youth under 16 by 2027.

Furthermore, as early as 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified mobile phone electromagnetic radiation as a Group 2B “possibly carcinogenic to humans” agent, proving that the cumulative effect of long-term exposure to “electrosmog” can no longer be ignored.

In modern life where escaping electromagnetic waves entirely is impossible, alongside following global trends to reduce over-reliance on electronic products, having an active safety barrier is essential.
